Cherie graduated valedictorian from the UST High School in 1967. She was given the highest honor by the University: the Aquinas Award, only the third in the more than 350-year history of the institution at that time. This is earned only by first being awarded the Rector's Award for academic excellence, the Quezon award for leadership, and the Benavides award for giving the university honor in inter-University competitions.
