Miracles

As a medical student I have studied about cancer, its etiology and pathogenesis. As a pediatric resident and pediatrician, I have seen not a few children whose lives were cut short and whose families were devastated by cancer. As a teacher of medicine, I have studied, discussed and sometimes lectured on xenobiotics, mutagenesis, oncogenes and the medical nutrition therapy of cancer. But no time in my life has cancer become so personal and so real when it started clawing its way into the body, spirit and life of my sister Cherie. Cancer might have disparaged and withered my sister’s body, but it did strengthen her spirit. Instead of throwing our family into despair and gloom, it has further united and made our family closer. We did pray fervently for a miracle. The miracle of cure may not have come, but it did come in a few more months of borrowed time: enough for my sister to see, feel and enjoy her first grandchild, Alex, even for a few months. The miracle of healing may not have come, but it did bring together a family of 12 from three continents. And in those few glorious days of May in Lake Arrowhead we were one. We may not get all the miracles we prayed for. But God gave us Cherie for 62 years and she has lived a good and full life. And that is one great miracle that the Bautista Family is truly thankful for.
