Visiting Puput

At some point last week, after we had been watching a gallery of Puput's pictures, Davy said to me, "Tita Tish, you have a lot of pictures with my Mom." But of course -- that's because I was always visiting Puput. She left the house quite early when she married Jun, but I took every opportunity to visit them -- whether it be Jakarta, Singapore, or Pasadena. I was with Jun and Puput when they made their sentimental trip to Singapore in March 2012 (a few weeks before the heartbreaking cancer diagnosis). And I joined them during the two times they visited Gina and family in Nova Scotia, in October 2008 and September 2012. She was always thoughtful and considerate towards her houseguests. Though she had a full-time job, she organized day trips from Pasadena so we visited places like the San Juan de Capistrano Mission, Getty Villa, Solvang, the Ronald Reagan Library, and of course, very early during my travels, Disneyland and California Adventure. In the later times I visited Pasadena, she bought tickets for us for a Janis Ian concert (we are both fans; she introduced me to Janis Ian's music), for the tribute to Stephen Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl, an evening of classical music at the Hollywood Bowl, a play (was it Little Women?) at Pantages Theater. The Hollywood Bowl outings were special because we always prepared a basket of sandwiches and drinks before we went to the nosebleed section (her term) of the amphitheatre way way up. There were afternoons she would leave work early so she could accompany me shopping at Ross or Walmart or Costco. One time when Gigi visited, we spent an afternoon going to another city near Pasadena to look for beads for Gigi's passion at that time, making bling-blings. Her thoughtfulness was most evident whenever I arrived at their home in Rose Court after a long trip from the Philippines. She always had a pot of hearty minestrone soup bubbling on the stove. And every time I left Rose Court for home, she always prepared thick turkey or chicken sandwiches with a lot of mayo and, in a separate Ziploc bag, sliced tomatoes for the journey to the airport and the long wait there. Thus, visiting her three times this past year, I was doubly heartsick knowing that no soup would be waiting because Puput was already terribly sick. So, yes, Davy, we have a lot of pictures together. Right now I can hardly see them through my tears. She was a gentle, lovely, kind, considerate soul, with no rough edges -- I think, the best of us all -- and I miss her so much.
